Tucked away in a quiet residential area of Yomitan Village, Okinawa, there’s a charming bakery called Commons, where bread is baked in a traditional wood-fired oven 🍞🔥
It’s easy to miss (we did get lost for a bit!), but once we arrived… wow. Absolutely worth it! ✨

🥖 Natural Yeast Bread, Wood-Fired to Perfection

At Commons, bread is made from natural yeast and baked in a handmade wood-fired oven, using mostly local Japanese wheat.

Each loaf is simple and rustic, but with so much depth in flavor — crunchy on the outside, moist and fluffy inside. You can taste the quality in every bite.

Fun fact: the name “Commons” comes from the idea of “shared space”, encouraging people to slow down and enjoy good bread with others. A beautiful philosophy behind the food!

🥯 Must-Try: The “LOX” Bagel Sandwich (¥990)

One of their most popular items is the LOX – a wood-fired bagel filled with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and fresh vegetables.

It’s rich, flavorful, and satisfying. The bagel has a chewy texture from the fire-baking method, which pairs so well with the creamy filling. A perfect light lunch! 😋

🥣 The Burdock Root Soup… A Hidden Gem!

Surprisingly, what stood out most during my visit was the burdock root soup!

This warm, earthy soup brings out the natural sweetness and depth of the burdock. It’s a traditional Japanese root vegetable, and the flavor was simply stunning. Highly recommended!

☕ Great Coffee Too

Commons also serves fantastic drip coffee, perfectly balanced between richness and acidity.
It pairs wonderfully with the bread and soup, and I ended up drinking two cups without even realizing!

🌿 Final Thoughts

If you’re visiting Okinawa and looking for something off the beaten path, Commons is a perfect stop for breakfast or lunch.
The passion behind the bread, the unique cooking method, and the relaxing vibe all make it a truly local hidden gem.

Next time, I’ll try to arrive earlier to grab more of their popular loaves — I heard the country bread sells out fast!
