Farewell to “Cafe Kurukuma” – Okinawa’s Famous Scenic Cafe Closing October 31, 2025
If you’ve ever dreamed of savoring Thai curry while gazing at the endless Pacific, Cafe Kurukuma in Nanjo City, Okinawa has long been the spot. Since opening in 2001, this hilltop restaurant became a bucket-list stop for travelers thanks to its sweeping ocean views and hearty Asian herb cuisine.
Why it’s closing
The operator, Nakazen, explained that staff who left during the pandemic couldn’t be replaced, and the longtime Thai chef’s departure left no successor. At its peak the team numbered around 30, but it has reportedly dropped to roughly 10—making stable operations difficult.
What made Kurukuma special
Perched above the coast in southern Okinawa, Kurukuma pairs a cinematic terrace view with bold, flavorful Thai curries that fit the subtropical setting. It’s been an easy add to any Okinawa itinerary—especially for a lunch stop between Se-fa Utaki, beaches, and scenic drives across Nanjo.
After October 31
- The cafe, shop, and campsite will close on Oct 31, 2025.
- Nakazen’s health-food manufacturing and sales will continue.
- Future plans for the site are under consideration.
How to plan a last visit (quick tips)
- Go early (doors open time may vary) to avoid waits and enjoy the clearest views.
- Weather shifts fast: bring a hat or light layer—terrace can be sunny or breezy.
- Driving: southern Okinawa is easiest by rental car. Parking fills on weekends/holidays.
